Many other companies offering recording interfaces add the cheapest possible microphone preamplifier as an afterthought to the interface.

PreSonus knows that the preamplifier is a key component in the sonic quality of a recording. The job of a microphone preamplifier is to boost microphone level signals to line level so that the signal can be converted from analog to digital. This mic to line boost is generally a preamplification of over times the voltage of the original mic level signal. This preamplification stage is one of the most important stages that the signal will go through before converted to digital, and is why a high performance preamplifier is important to achieving great results.

A cheap “off the shelf op-amp” type mic preamp that is found in most interfaces translates into thin, noisy and harsh results. All XMAX preamplifiers are built with the same three elements:

If you need extra digital mixer channels, the DixiMax FS provides a cost-effective, robust solution. Pros So many ins! Cons No computer connection options. Project studio builders will typically kit themselves out with enough audio ins and outs to cater for their own needs. Then friends get wind of the rig and, sniffing a money-saving opportunity, attempt to blag some free recording for their bands.

A drum kit will occupy four at the very least, then there’s the bass, guitar, vocal mic and whatever else.

So, I recently got a new audio interface…and I was looking for a new preamp to power my dynamic mic. The Studio Channel was one of many that I was looking at, then I got shipping notification from AMS that they were sending me this next for review. This is a channel strip style mic pre, has a built in compressor, eq, and even has a tube in it for that overdriven tube sound. Unlike other Presonus audio interfaces like the Presonus FireStudio or the Presonus AudioBox , this will not connect directly to your computer, you run it into the inputs of your interface or whatever you use to get your audio into your computer.

You could also run it live on stage into a mixer like the Presonus StudioLive or whatever you have as part of your setup. The bottom line is, this device gives you the tools to sculpt your audio input to your liking. I love the fact that it has a built in compressor and eq so I can tweak the sound to my own environment or for whatever feel I want at the time.

For example different mics, a bass, a guitar, or synth, will all sound different through the circuitry.

An old new way of working… I promised a more thorough update — well, here it is. In my previous post about workflow, the studio, art etc. I happened upon the solution totally by chance.

I’m noticing that this blog is kinda turning into a PreSonus hate blog with the past few posts. Whoops. Continuing with that, the other day I woke up to a text that the PreSonus in the radio studio is dead and it put me in such an amazing mood for the rest of the day.

Accessories The Little Interface That Can The story The Little Engine That Could tells of a small locomotive that was able to pull a long train over a mountain because it was willing to work hard and thought it could succeed. Successful bands are a lot like that. So is the FireStudioT Mobile. This little audio-recording machine is ready, willing, and able to work hard and travel anywhere. If you need more than ten inputs for certain gigs, you can daisy-chain the FireStudio Mobile with a second FireStudio Mobile, or with any interface in the FireStudio family, for up to 52 inputs and outputs.

The FireStudio Mobile may be small, but it uses top-of-the-line components, including XMAX preamps and high-definition, bit, 96 kHz digital converters, with dB of dynamic range. And with PreSonus’ lauded JetPLL jitter-elimination technology, you get the tightest, most reliable digital sync in the industry.

Excellent product in its functionality and especially for its price range a very good sound quality. Finally, after much adjustment, it works correctly. Moreover, I do not have time to read manuals.

Feb 12,  · stickulari wrote:Hey Joey, you can set up your DAW as a mixer before you start if you want.I would say take the signals dry and play with them later, when you’re not concentrating on the performance. You could set your mixer up so that it receives analogue output from the interface as an input and listen to the mixer for monitoring.

Tweet There’s no doubt that computer software has blurred the lines between writing music and producing it. We use sounds to inspire parts, build backing tracks before we create melodies, and cull upon a myriad of eff ects to give our songs a “sound”—often long before they’re completed. But what happens to that sound when you showcase the song live?

You have a few options. You could sing and play along to a static backing track though many people feel that’s like doing Karaoke. You could rearrange the song and use whatever live instruments you have available to get close to the original.
