1.SC extends deadline for linking of Aadhaar to all services to March 31

  • The Supreme Court said Aadhaar linking is mandatory by March 31for anyone opening a new bank account in an interim order.
  • This arrangement will prevail while the top court examines the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act in January.

2.India’s ‘Newton’ out of race for Oscars.

  • Rajkumar Rao starrer ‘Newton’, India’s first official entry to Oscars 2018, has failed to make it to the Best Foreign Language Film category’s new shortlist for the 90th Academy Awards.
  • ’Newton’ revolves around a government clerk on election duty in a Naxal-controlled town.

3.Winter session of Parliament in 2017 to be shortest in 20 years.

  • This year’s winter session of the Parliament is scheduled to begin today and end on 5th Jan 2018 and have only 14 proposed sittings.
  • 14 sittings is the lowest for any winter session since 1999. Opposition parties alleged that this is being done BJP so as to avoid discussions on demonetization and GST.

4.Congress accuses PM Modi of violating code by holding roadshow.

  • Congress claimed that Election Commission was working “under pressure from PM and PMO”.
  • Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala called the EC a “captive puppet of the PM” which has turned into “BJP’s frontal organization”.

International News

1.E-waste with $55 bn of gold and silver produced in 2016: Report.

  • A UN-backed report has revealed that e-waste weighing 44.7 million tonnes, equivalent to nine pyramids of Giza, was generated across the world in 2016.
  • The e-waste includes discarded mobiles, old computers and TV sets, contained 55 billion dollars of gold, silver and copper. The study projected that e-waste generated will climb to 52.2 million tonnes by 2021.

2.Aim to reverse US president Donald Trump’s Jerusalem move: Ismail Haniyeh.

  • The leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, has vowed to reverse US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
  • ”No superpower is capable of offering Jerusalem to Israel. Our souls, our blood, our sons and our homes are a sacrifice for Jerusalem”, the militant group leader added during a rally in the Gaza strip.

3.US regulator repeals Obama-era net neutrality rules.

  • The US Federal Communications Commission(FCC) voted 3-2 in favour to repeal net neutrality rules set during Obama-era.
  • The 2015 rules barred internet service providers from blocking, slowing access to or charging more for certain content to grant equal access to the internet.

4.Gurbir S Grewal all set to be first Sikh attorney-general of US state

  • A turban wearing Sikh-American lawyer has been nominated as the next Attorney-General of the American state of New Jersey.
  • A child of immigrants from India, Grewal grew up in Bergen and Essex counties of New Jersey.

Business News
1.Cryptocurrency market worth more than Warren Buffett’s firm.

  • The combined market value of all crypto currencies has now surpassed the $500 billion mark, making them more valuable than billionaire Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway($491 billion).
  • The most valuable cryptocurrency is Bitcoin($280 billion), followed by Ethereum($68 billion) and Bitcoin Cash($32 billion). Notably, the total value of digital currencies has climbed more than 2,800% this year.

2.Volkswagen to hike prices by up to RS.20,000.

  • Volkswagen is all set to hike the prices of its vehicles in India by up to Rs.20,000 from January 2018.
  • The decision has been made in order to reduce the impact of rising input costs.

3. Corporation Bank cuts overnight MCLR by 0.1 per cent

  • Public sector lender Corporation BankBSE -1.50 % today said it has reduced its marginal cost of funds based lending rate (MCLR) by 0.1 percentage point for overnight loan maturities.
  • The bank has cut the overnight MCLR by 0.1 per cent to 7.80 per cent.

Sports News
1.PV Sindhu in semi-final of Dubai World Superseries Finals.

  • India’s shutter PV Sindhu reached the semi-final of the year-ending Dubai World Superseries Finals after defeating Japan’s Sayaka Sato 21-13, 21-12 in her second group match.
  • Earlier in the day, K. Shrikanth crashed out of the tournament with his second loss in a row. He lost to Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen 21-18, 21-18.

2.Indian cricketers’ pay to be doubled.

  • The CoA has approved the pay hike demand set by Virat Kohli as the Supreme Court appointed board has decided to double the salaries of international and domestic players.
  • The CoA is looking for ways to add another Rs.200 Cr to present amount of Rs.180 crore.

3.Narinder Batra declared elected as IOA president

  • International Hockey Federation (FIH) chief Narinder Batra was on Thursday elected as president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for a four-year term by an overwhelming majority in the polls held at its Annual General Meeting.
  • Batra’s election to the top post was on expected lines after Khanna, a former All India Tennis Association (AITA) president, ‘withdrew’ from the contest in a surprise move.
