1. Maharashtra produces most biomedical waste in India

  • The state produced over 70,000 kg of waste such as syringes bandages and amputated body parts.
  • The advanced medical treatment facilities in the state contributed to the high figures.

2. Kerala to declare jackfruit as state fruit

  • This is an attempt by the govt to promote the production and sale of jackfruit.
  • The govt expects to generate a revenue of Rs.15,000 cr through the sale of jackfruit.

3. Tata Sons head Chandrasekaran elected IISc President

  • Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran was elected President of the court of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for three years
  • “Chandrasekaran has been elected as the 8th President of the institute for the period 2018-21 and takes over from K. Kasturirangan,” said the Bengaluru-based institute in a statement.

4. Bhawana Kanth becomes 2nd Indian woman to fly fighter aircraft solo

  • Flying officer Bhawana Kanth became the second woman pilot of the Indian Air Force to fly a fighter aircraft solo. She flew a MiG-21 “Bison” from Ambala Air Force Station.
  • In February this year, flying officer Avani Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman to fly a fighter aircraft solo.

International News

1. Pak pulls out of WTO meet in India

  • Pak will not attend the WTO meet to be held in Delhi amid the ongoing political tension between the nations.
  • India has invited ministers of more than 50 nations including the US and China to attend the meet.

2. Putin casts vote seeking 4th presidential term

  • The elections are being held on the day marking the 4th anniversary of Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
  • Putin is Russia’s longest-serving leader since Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

3. Sri Lanka lifts nationwide emergency

  • Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena announced that the emergency has been lifted after 12 days.
  • The emergency was announced to control communal violence after Buddhists and Muslims clashed in Kandy.

4.UN launches $951 million appeal for Rohingya refugees

  • United Nations agencies and NGO partners released a 2018 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis, with a $951 million appeal to meet the urgent needs of nearly 900,000 Rohingya refugees.
  • The 2018 appeal for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis was launched by UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, IOM Director General William Swing and the UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh Mia Seppo.

Business News

1. UK took 150 yrs to achieve India’s 30-yr progress : Economist

  • Paul Krugman said that the high degree of inequality is a problem.
  • He added that India has become a much easier place to do business than it was.

2. Only 16% of initial and final GST returns for July-Dec match

  • The GST returns data showed that 34% of the businesses paid Rs.34,400 cr less tax during the period while filing initial returns.
  • There was also excess tax payment of Rs.91,072 cr by 49.36% of businesses.

3. US investigates Hyundai, Kia airbag failures

  • The US govt’s road safety agency said it is currently aware of 6 crashes where airbags failed to deploy in frontal collisions.
  • The problem may affect 4.25 lakh cars made by the South Korean manufacturers.

4. US is India’s 2nd biggest arms supplier

  • As India diversifies its arms purchases, the US is rapidly increasing its arms sales to India and has emerged as the second biggest supplier by providing 15 percent of its weapons imports.
  • Russia has remained by far India’s biggest arms seller with 62 per cent share of India’s arms imports during the past five years.

1. Indian challenge at All England ends

  • PV Sindhu crashed out of All England Open after losing in the semis to Akane Yamaguchi.
  • If Sindhu would’ve won, she would’ve become only the second Indian after Saina Nehwal to enter All England final.

2. India pipped by Poland to host 2019 FIFA U-20 WC

  • The FIFA Council Members voted in favour of Poland for hosting the tournament.
  • The tournament’s last edition was hosted by South Korea.

3. Deepa Malik becomes Asian rank 1 in javelin F-53 category

  • Indian para-athlete Deepa Malik won a gold medal in the F-53/54 category javelin event at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai.
  • She also became the Asian rank one in the F-53 category
